Okay, with all that housekeeping stuff out of the way, onto some fun updates around the house!

Our kids were with their grandparents for the weekend, so we thought it would be fun to have a few surprises for them when they came back.  Our oldest has been needing a desk for a while now (you can see my post about his room here) and we found this great one at Ikea.

Another kids’ space that got a facelift was our playroom.  I shared this room on Instagram a week or so ago.  I’m always looking for creative ways to display our kids’ artwork and I just decided to start taping it up on the wall in here, almost like wallpaper.  We can just add to it now over time! I used this room for one year as a homeschool room but now it houses all of our toys, some books and art supplies, and we can use it as a guest room as well.  See a before picture of it in this post.

Another great Ikea find over the weekend was this huge planter and split leaf Philodendron.  I hear this things are pretty hard to kill… hopefully that’s true!  I love the life and texture it brings to this spot! Split Leaf Philadendron : The House of Figs

I’ve never shared our master bedroom with you guys here before and one day I’ll do an entire post about this room with more pictures, but I did want to share a few iPhone shots I recently took.  We finally hung pictures above our bed- it used to be two large pictures of our oldest two children.  We do have a third… he’ll be two next month.  Yeah, the master bedroom has kind of taken a backseat, unfortunately!

Gallery Wall :: The House of Figs

Not to overdramatize, but it has been almost life changing to have this gallery wall in here now.  Its like a whole new room.  And it feels special and I keep it cleaner and more like the haven it should be. I will do a whole new post dedicated to this room and I want to share with you how I planned out and hung these pictures as well.  But really, I thought I needed all new bedroom furniture.  And all new bedding.  Nope- turns out I just needed to shop my house and use what I have in a more creative way.  Life changing, I’m telling you!

Lastly, remember this post about my stair wall and the art nook that used to be there?  I finally have a plan and some frames ready to be hung!  That will be my next project- I’ll keep you updated!

Foyer : The House of FigsThanks so much for reading and like I said, I’d love feedback from my subscribers out there (or even if you’re not a subscriber!)!  This blogging stuff is hard y’all!  Big shout out to Jones Design Company and their Blog Class for helping me get this far.  I’ve learned a ton and felt in over my head about a million times, but I’ve come a long way. Here’s to lots more decorating, blogging, and looking for the purpose in it all. <3

The Montgomery House Boy’s Room

Big Boy Room Moodboard

Today I’m sharing with you more after pictures from The Montgomery House.  This time its the boy’s room!  Above you can see the moodboard I created.  Read more about the planning of this space here.

Above the bed is another Lindsay Letter’s piece from her Hobby Lobby line.  Just perfect for a little boy’s room! The metal B was a Round Top find.

Here’s the other side of the room.  I promise I’ll share that sweet jack and jill bathroom with you next!

My favorite Ikea Kallax, once again making an appearance!  You know I love these things. I also have said this a million times, but I love to decorate with books.  Especially in a kid’s room- just look at all that fun color!  Nothing matchy-matchy here or stressing over “will this pillow case match?” When you use your kids’ toys and books as the color palette, everything matches.  Using neutral furniture and wall color gives us a simple base from which to add in all this color so its not overwhelming.

Here’s another glimpse into that bathroom.  Notice the transom window above the entrance and the beautiful craftsman moldings. Its little details like this that their builder did a great job with.

The Montgomery House Master Bedroom

Today I’m sharing another room in the Montgomery House.  If you’re new here, this was a big project for me and a dream come true.  My dear friend and client asked me to design her custom built home about two years ago. It was my first professional project and helped to launch the business I have now.  I finished it up in April and my husband took the photos I’ve been slowly sharing.  Click here for more of the posts about this house.

Also if you’re new here and you’d like to see posts about my house click here.

Okay onto the reason for today’s post- this dreamy master bedroom!

I love long white curtains with a black rod.  I read somewhere that a black rod is like eyeliner for your windows.  I completely agree.  This is the only room we put curtains up in the Montgomery House.  Because it is a craftsman style home, every window has these beautiful craftsman moldings.  But the bedroom needed the curtains just for a more romantic feeling in my opinion.  Since it is so neutral (and I love a neutral bedroom), the more fabrics and textures you can have the better.  Curtains add to that. We still get a glimpse of the beautiful woodwork in between.

I’ve put this framed print in several master bedrooms lately.  It is by the talented Lindsay Letters but it is part of the line she has available at Hobby Lobby.

A Playroom {After}

Several weeks ago I shared with you the moodboard of a playroom I was working on.  You can see that post here. Today I’m happy to share with you the finished room!

The House Of Figs Playroom

We created several different zones with words on the wall- Read, Play, and Create.  It turned out to be a fun and functional space for her kids to hang out!  The House Of Figs Playroom

The House Of Figs - Stewart Playroom_3 Small WM The House Of Figs PlayroomPictured below: Yes that is totally a floor lamp, but I am LOVING it sitting on that Ikea Kallax.  The scale is perfect and its just quirky and fun.  Its something she already had and when we had it on the floor, it was in the way of those big beautiful windows and just looked wimpy.  On the Kallax it went. Quirky and whimsical works in a playroom!

The House Of Figs - Stewart Playroom_2 Small WMThe Shel Silverstein pages framed in the “Read” area was all my client’s idea.  How fun is that?? I have always loved Shel Silverstein.  Such a great concept and goes so well in this little spot.

The House Of Figs - Stewart Playroom_5 Small WMI want to point out to you the frame around the thermostat.  That was another idea and find by my client.  She’s so creative!  Its so fun and makes the thermostat a piece of art on the gallery wall rather than an eyesore or just something to work around.

The House Of Figs Playroom

The House Of Figs PlayroomThis is a little nook just off the playroom between her boys’ bedrooms. She finished it a while ago, but I thought I’d share pictures because it flows well now from the playroom and is just so cute.

This was a fun room to pull together. We used a lot of Ikea, Hobby Lobby, and some things she already had.  The letters were from all over the place, and a few even from Round Top. She found that lego table at a yard sale and refinished it, glued a big flat lego piece to the top and it is just the most adorable thing.  I think I could play all day in here!

A Few Ikea Favorites

Do you have an Ikea close to you?  I don’t like to peruse much because it can be pretty overwhelming, especially when I try to take my kids, but I now have some tried and true favorites that I have depended on over and over again.  Head straight for the downstairs warehouse area (or online) and go right for these- they will not fail you!

I’ve mentioned them before but hands down, my favorite curtains are the Ikea Ritvas.

Ritva Curtains

The website picture really doesn’t do them justice, but they come in 98″ and 118″ long and range from $25-$35.  They hang so nicely and you really cannot beat the price for that length.  I really prefer to hang my curtains as long as possible- from ceiling to floor.  That can be expensive with custom fabric, which is why I tend to use Ikea curtains.  Hang them with a nice thick, dark curtain rod for contrast and they are just beautiful.

Another favorite that I use quite frequently is the Ikea Ribba frame.  It has a modern look to it- no beveling, and comes with a matte.  Only $10 for an 8×10.  They also come in a big square and other smaller sizes. They are great to mix and match with other frames you may already have.  I have them all over my home, here are just a few spots.

The Eivor throw blanket is a great one for a classic black and white stripe.  Who doesn’t love black & white?  It goes with almost everything.  I use this blanket along with this pillow (The Lappjung Ruta) quite frequently (for myself and clients) because they are just so fun and graphic but don’t require a lot of color commitment.

As for furniture, I have a few go-to favorites.  I pretty much love anything from the Hemnes line.  Most of it is real wood and they have simple but clean moldings that make them look a little nicer than your typical Ikea furniture pieces.  You do have to put everything together for yourself, but that’s how they are able to keep prices so low.  They come in some great colors.  We have a dresser and some bookshelves from this line.

Finally, the shelf formerly known as the Expedit.  When I heard they were discontinuing the Expedit, I nearly cried.  Seriously.  We have two of these, and I recommend them to friends and clients all the time.  It is the most versatile, useful, and inexpensive piece of furniture I have ever owned.  But then I found out they just updated and renamed it!  So cry no more, my friends!  May I introduce, the new and improved Kallax.

kallaxwhite kallaxpink kallaxgreen kallax

It comes in several different size configurations and colors now!  So fun. It can be turned vertically or horizontally and there are so many choices of canvas and woven baskets that fit perfectly in the squares for storage.  We have one in my oldest son’s room and one in our entry way. Both of ours are white, which actually I still think I would choose if I bought them now just because of the versatility.

It can be grown up or kid friendly.  Create more storage in a closet, or dress it up with some matching lamps in a foyer.  You can even put legs on it and make it tall enough to be a changing table in a baby’s room.  The opportunities are endless!

Is there anything at Ikea that you love?  What would you add to this list? I’d love to hear!
