A Spa Inspired Master Bedroom- After!

A Spa Inspired Bedroom // The House of FigsEarlier this week I shared with you the before pictures of this master bedroom (if you want, you can see those here).  We were going for a serene and relaxing spa inspired feeling.  I am loving how it all turned out!  They already had a beautiful headboard, beautiful wood floors- a lovely blank canvas from which to begin.  We kept the existing duvet and added new pillows and a few new accessories and pieces of furniture.  I don’t like to be matchy-matchy and an easy way to avoid that is to add in lots of texture and neutrals.  The pillows in the back are Euro shams so they stand up taller, giving a fuller appearance.

Master Bedroom // The House of FigsThe big white lamps lend lots of light for reading in bed.  Everything is bright and reflective.  I loved these plants my clients already had! Any space can benefit from something leafy and green!

Bedside table // The House of FigsIts always nice to have a drop spot for those spaces that can become so easily cluttered.  A little bowl and a pretty box on a bedside table are perfect for holding jewelry and hiding the not so pretty bedtime necessities- chapstick, lotion, ponytail holders, etc.

Above the bed, I used two of my favorite prints from Lindsey Letters– I recommend her prints and canvasses all the time!  Beautiful words for marriage and for life, don’t you think?

On the other side of the room, the tall chest of drawers was replaced with a wider dresser.  I surrounded it with a gallery of black and white family pictures and also added in a small reading spot.Spa Inspired Master Bedroom // The House of Figs

Spa Inspired Master Bedroom // The House of FigsThe rug brings in a little more color and pattern without competing too much with the duvet.  I love how subtle it is here.  Even if you don’t have wood floors, you can lay a rug right over your wall to wall carpeting!  They make special rug pads just for that.

The white curtains (my favorite Ikea Ritvas!) frame out that tricky window seat nicely making it feel like one large window.

Spa Inspired Master Bedroom // The House of FigsThis was a fun project and I’m so happy with how it turned out! Looking forward to sharing more with you.  I’m working on a few kids’ rooms right now and also finishing up The Spring Valley House.  More to come!  Thank you so much for reading!

A Spa Inspired Master Bedroom

Recently I created this moodboard for a master bedroom for new clients of mine.  They already had this beautiful headboard and duvet cover, but the rest of it needed some help to feel finished and put together.  They wanted a spa inspired space; relaxing and serene, inspired by the blues and greens in the duvet.

Spa Inspired Master Bedroom // The House of Figs

As you can see below, they already had some great things going for them- like those beautiful wood floors!   I wanted to keep everything mostly neutral and bring in some texture and metallics for visual interest.  I felt like the lamps were a little too small- I love a big lamp with some nice presence!  And the bedside tables, while they matched the bedding, they really didn’t play into the feeling we were trying to create- I wanted something a little more sophisticated, serene, and maybe even shimmery and reflective, like pools of water in a spa.  These were more like “look at me, I’m blue, and I match.”  They are totally cute and would work in a more eclectic and colorful space- and in fact she moved one of these to her guest room and it looks adorable- but if we really wanted the colors of the duvet to shine, I feel like we needed everything else to be a neutral and textured background.

This TV wall needed an update as well.  The clients needed a dresser and wanted to keep their TV.  Obviously the dresser is not the right scale for the space, but of course sometimes we just use what we have and it works for the time being!  They were ready to update it though so I can’t wait to show you how we changed this wall (and the rest of the room).Master Bedroom // BeforeSorry to keep you in suspense, but I’ll be back later this week with the after pictures! 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Updates Around the House and Blog!

Hey everyone!  Welcome to the new site!!  I’m hoping everything is working well and I’d love for you to click around and make yourself at home!

To all my email subscribers, you should have received this post to your inbox… if you did, will you leave me a comment and let me know it worked??  I’m still new to this whole blogging thing,  so I’d love the feedback.

If you are not receiving emails and you would like to, you can subscribe by clicking on the Follow via Email button to the right.

Okay, with all that housekeeping stuff out of the way, onto some fun updates around the house!

Our kids were with their grandparents for the weekend, so we thought it would be fun to have a few surprises for them when they came back.  Our oldest has been needing a desk for a while now (you can see my post about his room here) and we found this great one at Ikea.

Another kids’ space that got a facelift was our playroom.  I shared this room on Instagram a week or so ago.  I’m always looking for creative ways to display our kids’ artwork and I just decided to start taping it up on the wall in here, almost like wallpaper.  We can just add to it now over time! I used this room for one year as a homeschool room but now it houses all of our toys, some books and art supplies, and we can use it as a guest room as well.  See a before picture of it in this post.

Another great Ikea find over the weekend was this huge planter and split leaf Philodendron.  I hear this things are pretty hard to kill… hopefully that’s true!  I love the life and texture it brings to this spot! Split Leaf Philadendron : The House of Figs

I’ve never shared our master bedroom with you guys here before and one day I’ll do an entire post about this room with more pictures, but I did want to share a few iPhone shots I recently took.  We finally hung pictures above our bed- it used to be two large pictures of our oldest two children.  We do have a third… he’ll be two next month.  Yeah, the master bedroom has kind of taken a backseat, unfortunately!

Gallery Wall :: The House of Figs

Not to overdramatize, but it has been almost life changing to have this gallery wall in here now.  Its like a whole new room.  And it feels special and I keep it cleaner and more like the haven it should be. I will do a whole new post dedicated to this room and I want to share with you how I planned out and hung these pictures as well.  But really, I thought I needed all new bedroom furniture.  And all new bedding.  Nope- turns out I just needed to shop my house and use what I have in a more creative way.  Life changing, I’m telling you!

Lastly, remember this post about my stair wall and the art nook that used to be there?  I finally have a plan and some frames ready to be hung!  That will be my next project- I’ll keep you updated!

Foyer : The House of FigsThanks so much for reading and like I said, I’d love feedback from my subscribers out there (or even if you’re not a subscriber!)!  This blogging stuff is hard y’all!  Big shout out to Jones Design Company and their Blog Class for helping me get this far.  I’ve learned a ton and felt in over my head about a million times, but I’ve come a long way. Here’s to lots more decorating, blogging, and looking for the purpose in it all. <3

The Montgomery House Master Bedroom

Today I’m sharing another room in the Montgomery House.  If you’re new here, this was a big project for me and a dream come true.  My dear friend and client asked me to design her custom built home about two years ago. It was my first professional project and helped to launch the business I have now.  I finished it up in April and my husband took the photos I’ve been slowly sharing.  Click here for more of the posts about this house.

Also if you’re new here and you’d like to see posts about my house click here.

Okay onto the reason for today’s post- this dreamy master bedroom!

I love long white curtains with a black rod.  I read somewhere that a black rod is like eyeliner for your windows.  I completely agree.  This is the only room we put curtains up in the Montgomery House.  Because it is a craftsman style home, every window has these beautiful craftsman moldings.  But the bedroom needed the curtains just for a more romantic feeling in my opinion.  Since it is so neutral (and I love a neutral bedroom), the more fabrics and textures you can have the better.  Curtains add to that. We still get a glimpse of the beautiful woodwork in between.

I’ve put this framed print in several master bedrooms lately.  It is by the talented Lindsay Letters but it is part of the line she has available at Hobby Lobby.

A Big Boy Room

Big Boy Room Moodboard

We still have pictures to hang and some accessories to add in, but this room in The Montgomery House is well on its way!  Since I have two boys of my own, I love doing little boy rooms.  Take a mix of plaids, stripes, textures, some different metals & wood, plus add in some antlers for this hunting family, and you’ve got a man-child room with lots of space to play.  The colors aren’t match-matchy so toys and stuffed animals fit right in.  We’ve got some storage on the other side of the room that you can’t see here but will be perfect for this little guy’s books and toys and it will all grow with him.  Can’t wait to show you more once its finished!

Like anything you see here? Would love for you to share it on Facebook or pin it to your Pinboards! There are links below. As always, thanks for reading! <3

A Bright & Colorful Guestroom

Hello there! Sorry, today I’m posting the darkest picture ever (but before pictures are supposed to be bad, right?).

IMG_7439This is my friend’s guest room.  Her style is so bright and fun and colorful, but of course we all have those rooms that just sort of get neglected.  When its the guest room that you rarely use it doesn’t really matter!  Her in-laws were coming to stay in just a couple of weeks though so we needed to do something quick to perk up this room and make it a more welcoming space.

Here’s the plan we came up with:

Guest Room Moodboard

She had the walls painted gray and we used my favorite Ikea Ritva curtains on the windows.  Floor to ceiling- makes a big big difference! Since we were short on time and wanted to make the most of the budget (don’t we always want to make the most of our budget??) we decided to keep all existing furniture and just update the bedding.  We also added some bright & meaningful art, including several pieces done by her kids!  We found new lamps, and added in a graphic rug.  The result, I think, is a whole lot of fun!  We’re calling it The Love Shack, you’ll see why. 🙂

Their sweet little dog was just hanging out here the whole time Paul was shooting.  Seems like she thinks its a cozy little room!

It doesn’t take a huge budget or even a huge overhaul to make a big difference.  What’s that one room in your house that needs a little LOVE? 🙂
